Loceri is situated in the region Ogliastra. Limited from three sides by mountain chains and in the east by the sea, this region was able to conserve a lot of its nativeness. In the hinterland there are villages and small towns, which are built adventurously into the precipitous mountain flanks, such as Villagrande, Arzana, Lanusei, Osini and Ulassai with tight alleys and audaciously piled houses. Along the coast are arranged the villages Santa Maria, Lotzorai, Tortoli und Barisardo with their sandy beaches. Northern of Tortoli there is a mile long sandy beach, reaching up to Santa Maria and dominated by the offshore Isolotto d´Ogliastra. Between Tortoli and Barisardo extends a rocky coast interrupted by several bays and beaches like Orri, Cea and the Marina di Barisardo. After the Phoenician tower Torre di Barisardo follows a mile long sandy beach, which ends at the cliffy coast of Coco Rocci. In the whole region one can find more or less well conserved antique tower buildings, the Nuraghe, as well as typical funeral sites, the Domus de Janas and Tombe dei Giganti. Some of Sardinia’s most important Nuraghe are located between Tortoli and Ilbono (Sceri), in the forest Bosco di Selene near Lanusei and in Osini. With some discovery spirit the interested traveller can find a lot of smaller but nevertheless attractive historical sites. One of Sardinia’s most beautiful caves is the Grotta su Marmuri in the karst mountains above Ulassai. |
